Beauties

A period of intense creativity and experimentation, the 60s and 70s exert a lasting fascination on fashion for their bold modernity and aesthetic refinement. Taping the subtle way in which they fused glamour and casualness, updated with new flair and twists, these retro influences are now crystallizing, as they intersect with modern minimalism, into contemporary classics.

Instincts

Instincts taps the power of Nature and of intuition, a form of understanding and sensing that draws on instinctive feelings rather than conscious reasoning. Translated into fashion, it reinterprets natural winter codes into contemporary architectural styles. The rich “faux minimalist” feel is heightened by patched furs, neo-jacquards and textured materials.

Anticipations

In a constantly evolving environment, the imagination is free to dream up any number of future scenarios, from the most plausible to the most outlandish. This leads to a mutant, baroque and extremely hybrid mood. the composite silhouette combines cropped and super long proportions, oversized and fitted styles, stiff plastic-like materials and feminine fluidity.

Codes

Inspired by the strict rules of architecture, the simplicity of interior design and the functional features of uniforms and workwear, this no compromise design attitude taked minimalism and utilitarian styles to new bold heights. Masculine tailoring and protective sportswear, in roomy and relaxed 90s volumes, are given a modern aesthetic twist with graphic and linear grid motifs and modular multifunctional constructions.

    THE PROTECTIVE SHIELD OF MINIMALISM

A reaction to our desire to seek shelter from hostile natural elements, quiet, contemplative designs allow us to find serene calmness. Design becomes epic in its simplicity, purified from excess and humble in its minimalistic nature. Soft, pale pink and purple pastels are balanced by an earthy red and deep twilight blue. Touches of moody gray reflect the drainage of color which winter brings. Prints are composed of both fluid, wave-like lines and geometric structures, blurring and repeating to form camouflage effects. Our garments serve as armor to shield us from harsh winter conditions.

    UNIQUE ROOTS

With so much information at our fingertips today, creating one’s own focus and meaning is essential. To stand out from the mass, one must lay down roots and embrace organic beauty. The fresh colors of lemon yellow and pine green are deepened by the more faded shades of earth brown, sienna, and burgundy. Denim blue and stone gray also find their place in handcrafted, purposeful design. Prints have a nostalgic, unfinished feel, with lots of patchwork effects, imperfect florals, and vintage imagery. Woven fabrics are also used as a basis for print inspiration. Mixing the old with the new is key to creating one’s own focus and meaning.

    DIGITAL SURREALISM

Technology allows us to play in surreal dreamworlds which investigate the edges between normality and abnormality in life. Computer generated imagery creates illusions and delusions which are completely man-made. It allows us to further explore absurdity in art. Colors pack a refined punch and extreme hues such as tomato red, coral, Moroccan blue, and sour green create unexpected and unusual combinations. Black and white are added to create balance. Prints are geometric and futuristic, and completely digital, with almost no resemblance to anything natural. Heavy and obvious retouching is popular, as is surrealistic photo art. Exaggeration is key to inventing this super-realistic story.

Women's Top Forecasted Graphics - F/W 2016-17

Take a look at the top forecasted graphics for Fall/Winter 2016/17, showcasing the strongest graphic expressions on the Fashion Snoops radar. Inspiration stems from neon signs and graffiti verbiage to a renaissance grandeur and continuing floral expressions for women, while men’s graphics explore all from sci-fi and sea themes, lines of the earth and tailoring of the body.

We have compiled this information into a special report for Fashion Vignette members, courtesy of Fashion Snoops – where the full reports are available exclusively to subscribers. The full version of the trend report is available now for individual purchase in the Fashion Vignette Trend Shop.

    AFTER HOURS

Neon signs and graffiti verbiage combine, as we continue partying long into the night, and ignore the need for sleep. Even though the messages and life mantras are powerful, the style and execution are relatively simple in aesthetic, as graffiti is achromatic and controlled, and the neon lights sit between pinks and blues enhancing the idea of fun and youth.

    BEAUTY OF FLIGHT

Beautiful feather repeats, and abstract feathers combine within Beauty of Flight, as we see the moody and solemn side to the animal print story. The colors are decidedly dark and flocks of birds in a foggy sky particularly inspire. Perhaps these are the birds from The Moors in Wuthering Heights.

    LOCKER ROOM

This is our active graphic expression, which certainly takes a look back at the 70s, with regards to color palette, imagery and it’s retro-simplicity. Varsity lettering, strong color blocking and sporting badges combine, alongside go-faster stripes and old sporting flyers. We take a nostalgic look back at the cheer leading squad and the jocks attire, as red, white and yellow dominate.\

    STILL LIFE

Still life is an interesting new floral story, as we see a renaissance grandeur to the continuing floral expressions. Fruit and birds are also relevant here, as the designs are hand painted with a timeless appeal, as after all this art movement has origins in the Middle Ages.

    WUTHERING HEIGHTS

Wuthering Heights has proved to be one of the strongest pattern expressions of the season, as we see plenty of graphics worthy of a Victorian home. Moody dyes and baroque designs strengthen this aesthetic. The term “Horror Vacui”, which is the fear of empty space, is particularly enthralling, as we see wallpaper repeats and floral designs on decadent silhouettes. Black on black damask adds a somewhat gothic aesthetic, although pressed florals, and romantic Victorian novels adds a romantic sensibility.

DESIGN COMPETITION // FRONT ROW SOCIETY - TILED

CREATIVE BRIEF

Submission Deadline: 10 August, 2015, 6pm CET
Voting Starts: 10 August, 2015, 6pm CET

As you may already be aware, there are exciting changes occurring at Front Row Society as we transition to a more collaborative, conceptual approach to the way we create our designs and products. So it just seemed appropriate that our latest challenge reflect our move to a cleaner, more refined aesthetic while celebrating our Berlin roots and the way this city and culture continue to inspire us, season after season.

For this month's “Tiled” challenge, we’re asking you to explore the Bauhaus architecture and the reduced, geometric aesthetic it gave rise to. Go industrial and get inspired by ultra minimal tower blocks, or celebrate the domestic with smooth panels of perfectly interlocking dandelion tiles. From rough cement blocks to flawless ceramic grids, we can’t wait to see what you construct from your imaginations.

What can you win?

Each winner receives a one-off prize of 200€ once the collection launches on the website plus a sample of their products when it arrives in stock. But that is not all – if your design receives 500 orders on wholesale, you will receive an additional €200. This means that FRS can continue to embody the spirit of fashion democracy, rewarding our top designs again...and again...and again! We will also conduct an interview with the winner, publicizing their design across the fashion community in Berlin and worldwide.

TRENDS // FASHION SNOOPS - COLOR TREND REPORT F/W 2016-17

    WOMEN'S TOP 10 COLOR TREND REPORTS FOR F/W 2016-17

Fashion Snoops’ F/W 2016-17 Color Forecast is amazing, as always! Six key palettes are identified. Terrain, saturated earth colors makes the most influential mark, notably due to the comeback of brown tones. Frontier neutrals are notably darker than before. Impulse offers a vibrant palette of brights. Mystery offers jewel tones, with burgundy and cyan at the forefront. Nostalgia mid-tones are decidedly more vibrant. Finally, Cleanse acts as a palette cleanser with soft, barely-there pastels. The full report is available in the Fashion Vignette Trend Shop.

    TERRAIN - EARTH TONES PALETTE

As the name implies, TERRAIN yields a complete palette of saturated earth tones. This season, brown makes a major comeback which is reflected not only with roast, but also in hues like prune and warmer tones like cognac and coppertone. Both camel and toffee are key to the Terrain palette, positioned as influential outerwear colors. Marigold yellow and red rust add a spice component. Greens are also leveraged, from an olive base to light pea.

    OLIVE
Olive shifts into a darker shade this season with grey undertones. Olive combinations are best suited next to marigold as an accent or flax as a neutral

    COPPERTONE
Coppertone offers the richest shade of brown, evolving from lighter copper in recent seasons. A favorite combination fuses coppertone with plum and dark chocolate.

    RUST
Rust moves away from orange influence and becomes a much more red cast color. Tonal pairings incorporate rust with red orange or cognac.

    FRONTIER - NEUTRALS PALETTE

FRONTIER draws in a new group of neutrals which is notably darker than in recent seasons. Blue plays an integral role in the palette, ranging from a mid steel blue to teal-inspired diver and navy as a base color. Brown is also increasingly important with dark chocolate and a hearty flax color. Wheat is offered as the khaki of the season, while rich plum enters. Grey hues include dark charcoal and a mid-tone of slate, while petrol becomes a new sludge-inspired hue.

    DIVER
Diver evolves from dark teal into deeper blue tonalities. Color combinations offer newness ranging from forest to baby blue or violet orchid.

    DARK CHOCOLATE
Dark chocolate is certainly the deepest brown this season, leveraged highly in outerwear. Pairing the dark hue with reds like burgundy and scarlet fever adds newness.

    FLAX
Flax evolves from a lighter shade of hazy taupe into an earthy brown color. Hearty combinations also keep the outdoors in mind with camel, pea and roast.

    IMPLUSE - BRIGHTS PALETTE

IMPULSE identifies this season’s bright color palette. Red continues to play the most important role with a vibrant shade of scarlet red, while other warm brights include sunshine yellow and red orange. On the cooler side, Klein blue remains relevant after several seasons, while a similar intensity is channeled with midnight purple. Magenta pink rounds out the offering.

    SCARLET FEVER
Red remains a highly influential fashion color, complete with deep saturated scarlet fever. New parings incorporate neutrals like biscuit or soft ceramic blue.

    MYSTERY - JEWEL TONES PALETTE

MYSTERY sets the tone for this season’s jewel tones, which become much more rich and enchanting. The reds remain the most powerful message, lead by burgundy, and also extending to a deep cast of crimson. Cyan becomes increasingly popular set to teal tones, while forest adds in a necessary dose of green. Indigo is presented as a jewel alternative to navy. Purple is represented with eggplant and a darker cast of Byzantium. Metallic bronze balances out the palette.

    BURGUNDY
Burgundy remains the most important color in the jewel tone palette. Color combinations with magenta, tangerine or salmon add newness.

    NOSTALGIA - MIDTONES PALETTE

NOSTALGIA opens the door to one of the most lively mid-tone palettes in recent seasons. Blues play a key role, starting with a vibrant azure hue and extending to light periwinkle and baby blue. Warm colors are represented by tangerine orange and citrine yellow. Shamrock green grows in importance. Purples like light lilac and violet orchid are included, while salmon adds an unexpected element to the palette.

    BABY BLUE
Soft sky and blue hydrangea evolve into a brighter baby blue color. The combination of baby blue with camel stands out.

    CLEANSE - PASTEL PALETTE

CLEANSE acts as a palette cleanser, offering this season’s pastel shades. The faint palette incorporates color in a delicate way, including ceramic pink, lavender grey and biscuit. Beige tones also play an essential role, with rose taupe and foundation. Ivory presents a season appropriate off-white option, while dust grey rounds out the palette.

TRENDS // ECLECTIC TRENDS - EARTH COLOR TREND . 2015/16

From our FV contributor, Gudy Herder of Eclectic Trends who is based in Barcelona working as an Interior Stylist, Trend Observer and Trainer.  Her website Eclectic Trends is full of interior and trend inspirations,   http://eclectictrends.com.

Here is her latest 2015/16 color palette trends and you can view the entire report here.

Dear Fashion Vignette readers,

Today I’d like to share with you one of my favorite color palettes for 2015/16. I did an interesting exercise the other day in my moodboard masterclass and asked my students what they would sense in one word when seeing the tactile mood board displayed on the wall.

Their spontaneous answers were:  ancestral, organic, serene, feminine, glam, back to the roots, sienna, Marroc, tribe vibe, skin, basic, natural, sand and storm, desert, monk, tribe vibe…you see, that’s why I love this trend so much:)

Hope you enjoy it too!!

Warm regards,
Gudy

For 2015 the two major color forecast companies Pantone and AkzoNobel had predicted a color with a warm and natural background. Marsala on one side and Copper Orange respectively, were surprisingly close when it comes to talk earthy components.

TL to BR: Patrick Demarchelier | Styling Alessandra Salaris & Photography Beppe Brancato | via Zuujab | Marazzi

These predictions have been evolved and we see today combined a range of terracotta, burgundy, rust, ocher, pale pink and cinnamon shades – all gathered together offering an utterly beautiful color range to use in our day-to-day life.

Toasted colors are authentic, warm, versatile and have become timeless. And if you feel you want to contrast the sometimes rather feminine touch, black is a great component to offer a stronger and more sophisticated look.

Fashion, Beauty, Interior, Jewellery, Graphic Design, Arts&Crafts and other disciplines have joined in, and today I’d love to show you a few examples. What is great about this trend is how accessible and easy to integrate it is. And that is certainly not always the case when it comes to end consumer adoption.

Not only in the fashion world but basically in a wide array of fields, we celebrate that earthy tones, which look seemingly basic, can be both fashionable and functional. The above images which belong to a beautiful ceramics collection crafted by Kristie van Noort (more on collage n#4) or the hand-woven rug from CC-Tapis are lovely examples.

Among many good reasons to go for earthy tones, the fact that this palette serves as a kind of visual cleanser among all the bolder trends seen on the runway and international trade shows makes it doubly welcome, with colors ranging from nude and moss green, terracotta to khaki, rusty and neutral tones.

Actually it’s no surprise, since we still live and love the Green Trend longing for a slower and back to the roots life with its corresponding sustainable materials, loads of plants integrated in our every day, different approach of how and where to spend our vacations, including new food habits and living a more conscious life.

In other words, with such a wide color palette, we are going to see earthy tones for a while. My prediction is this trend to last until at least until AW 2016 including new shades but staying true to its essence. These are the colors for body, mind & soul.
